How to Choose the Right Outboard Motor

01. Choosing the Right Shaft Length

Shaft length must match your transom or the power-head will run hot and the prop will ventilate. Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull at the centerline, then match that number to the ranges here.

  • Short shaft: 15 inches (small tenders)
  • Long shaft: 20 inches (standard skiffs)
  • Extra-long shaft: 25 inches (deep-V hulls)

02. Tiller vs. Remote Steering

Tiller motors put the throttle and steering handle directly on the Engine, which suits open skiffs and jon boats where the operator sits aft.

Remote-steer motors run cables to a console wheel and throttle box, the right call for deck boats and offshore center consoles. Most motors over 115HP are remote only.

03. Matching Horsepower to Your Boat

Never exceed the maximum rating on your boat’s USCG capacity plate. Under-powering hurts too: an engine that struggles to plane burns more fuel and wears faster.

  • 2.5–20 HP: dinghies, canoes, small tenders
  • 25–75 HP: aluminum fishing boats and pontoons
  • 200+ HP: offshore center consoles and heavy hulls

What Our Clients are Saying

Verified customer reviews from our clients

I was extremely impressed with the excellent service I received throughout the entire process. Sarah was professional, knowledgeable, courteous and attentive to every detail. Nothing was too much trouble.
First class service from start to finish. Happy to recommend to others.

I had a relaxed pressure free viewing experience, and felt I received a great deal on the motor. The sales team, Wesley and Brett have been most helpful, friendly and efficient. The Yamaha outboard motor was delivered free of charge to my door and I was then taken through the new technology and set up which was extremely helpful.

Right from inception to inception Staff was absolutely brilliant even the handover was very professional .
Great customer experience .

I had to wait around the local ermine area (inside a library) for a lot of the day waiting for an update but you gave me no updates or timescale on how long I’d be waiting or updates throughout the day or worst still no call on when it would be ready, I had to come down to chase

Mike made sure that I get the car that I wanted and communicated really well with me, explained all documents thoroughly and was very polite and patient through out the whole time.

An excellent experience from start to finish! The service was seamless, efficient and professional. Mike was incredibly helpful, taking the time to explain all the features of the motor and arrange a thorough test drive. The paperwork was handled smoothly and efficiently, making the whole process stress free. I’m absolutely delighted with my new Suzuki motor and would highly recommend the service. Thank you, Mike.

I would especially like to recognize Mike for his outstanding customer service. I originally visited the showroom just to look at the new 2021 Mercury 80HP, with no intention of buying one that day. However, Mike’s honesty, genuine approach and professionalism completely changed my mind.
